David Welch is an award-winning wedding and portrait photographer based on Martha’s Vineyard, trusted by couples and families for nearly two decades. Now celebrating his 20th year in business, David brings a rare blend of artistic vision, technical expertise, and calm professionalism to every shoot—capturing the moments that matter with timeless, storytelling imagery.
Since opening his studio on the Island in 2005, he has photographed hundreds of weddings, family gatherings, and milestone events with an approach that’s equal parts creative and documentary. Whether he’s guiding a portrait session or blending into the background on a wedding day, David’s warm presence puts clients at ease—and his work speaks for itself.
A 2015 “40 Under 40” honoree from the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, David holds an MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
Based in Vineyard Haven with his wife Trina, their children Camden and Declan, and their dog Jules, David photographs on Martha’s Vineyard, across New England, and beyond. He brings dedication, consistency, and heart to every session—building lasting relationships and creating heirloom-quality images that stand the test of time.

The Photography Studio
Completed in 2018, the climate-controlled David Welch Photography studio is conveniently located in Vineyard Haven and available for rental. The space includes a full range of professional gear: Profoto monolights, light modifiers, scrims, flags, backdrops, and all necessary grip and stands. Twin workstations are set up for tethered shooting and come equipped with the latest Adobe Creative Suite.
Whether you need a versatile space for editorial work or are looking to collaborate with an experienced studio photographer for magazine or commercial projects, David Welch offers the tools, talent, and creative environment to bring your vision to life.

"As a bride, finding the perfect photographer to capture our wedding day was one of my first priorities. I knew this would be a struggle when I was researching online and found an immense amount of photographers on Martha’s Vineyard. When we were in contact with David, we immediately knew we wanted him to be a part of our most special day! David proved to be beyond perfect. He is extremely professional, easy to communicate with and most importantly a genuine person who is talented beyond words.
Because we lived in CT, the majority of our communication was through email, text or phone calls. He was quick to respond with creative and unique places to shoot on our wedding day. He was thorough and ensured all of our requests were fulfilled. He even met us at our rehearsal the night before to go over details for our ceremony. Our wedding party couldn’t say nicer words about David. He made everyone feel at ease and was very flexible and fun. One of our groomsmen told us how he’s never had such a great time taking pictures with a wedding party. "David is truly phenomenal! My husband and I first met him at the Harbor View's New Years Eve party the night we were engaged, and the moment I knew we were getting married on the Vineyard I knew I had to contact David. He responded almost immediately, and remembered us - and said how special it was for him to capture our first photo as an engaged couple. That comment stood out to me, and I knew we had to have David as our photographer! He even suggested doing our first look down at the harbor where we got engaged, an idea I hadn't even considered (it was amazing!) He's creative, talented, and a true pleasure to be around. Besides your better half, you probably spend most of your wedding day with your photographer - so although quality is a top priority, choosing someone who is genuine, kind, flexible and spirited is also SO important! "I cannot write enough good things about David Welch. I spoke to a lot of photographers before deciding on David and I knew the first time I talked to him that he was going to be “the one.” He was incredibly flexible with what we wanted and went through step by step how the day would go. "I contacted David to set up a family portrait session on Martha's Vineyard for my in-laws 45th wedding anniversary. He responded very quickly, had great work to show, friendly response, fantastic reviews and incredible rates! We booked in May for our August vacation. He gave us tips for locations and style and kept in touch as the event approached. On the day he was the nicest easiest person to be around --even with pointing a camera at our faces! I have a 2 year old who was part of the shoot and he worked so well with him- and quickly knowing dinner was approaching for the little one!
